A recent study said that Heavy Metal music might be bad for your heart. Yeah, and bullsh*t is bad for your brain.
Only in America would they make this ASSumption. According the the U.K.s Telegraph there was an American study where they took 10 “Healthy” non-smokers and asked them to stop listening to their favorite music for two weeks and then subjected them to listening to other types of music while using an ultrasound to observe their arterial activities in their upper arm.
They found that people whose arteries dilated did so when listening to soothing music like Mr. Sunshine On My Shoulder, John Denver. Music that made them anxious made the blood vessels narrow. Um, doesn’t anything that makes you anxious make your blood vessels narrow and in turn create high blood pressure?
However, they do take in to account the persons musical preferences.
“The idea here was that when they listened to this music that they really enjoyed, they would get an extra boost of whatever emotion was being generated,” said Dr Miller.
“You can’t read into this too much, although you could argue that country music is light, spirited, a lot of love songs,” said study leader Dr Michael Miller, from the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
Stressful or disturbing music, on the other hand, narrows the arteries and may be bad for the heart.
I have to say that some music makes me anxious. Like country music. When I hear it I’m very anxious to turn it off or flee from the source. You have to take in to account the persons emotional conditions as well. One person may get a relaxed feeling from Heavy Metal music, whereas another may get hyped up and angry. Same thing with country and hip hop. Some people may listen to country and it makes them happy and others sad. It all depends on the person. You can not base the cardiovascular reaction to emotion based on music. If you look at it that way then we need to start testing people on video games, board games, T.V. shows, movies etc. So that last line in the block quote pretty much sums it up. What is stressful or disturbing music to one may be just the opposite for another.
I wonder how much money was wasted on this study that could have perhaps gone to children’s cancer research or something?
