Fructose Intolerance – Just stick to the basics, will you…

Posted Apr 21 2011 8:29am

Prejudice. It's a deadly word especially if you live it out through your words and actions. If one might ask where it comes from, the answer to that question is perhaps, ignorance.

And this ignorance or the ability to be discriminating enough causes one to make generalizations (again a deadly thing!) and some of them border on the extreme in the form of intolerance.

Yet instead of acting like the 'intelligent animals' as we're supposed to be, we tend to treat other humans with these narrow-minded paradigms that have been constructed by our minds.

Religious intolerance is one of the obvious examples of today, and  perhaps, our intolerance to one specific religion (you should know which) that has caused so much death and damage is understandable, and is definitely an exception to the rule… especially, since it's more about self-preservation than upholding sacred ideals and beliefs that some people tend to idealize in a world that is anything but ideal!

At another level altogether, health conditions that include the word 'intolerance' are similarly very 'basic' in nature, and require one to consciously avoid certain foods that might not help you stay in good health!

A Note on Fructose Intolerance

Right off the bat, fructose intolerance is merely an adverse reason to high levels of fructose that is consumed, and this manifests itself as a digestive disorder.

Interestingly, most people (almost one out of three) are considered to be sensitive to higher levels of fructose in the body but this condition of  "fructose intolerance".

The reason for this particular condition to occur is due to the fact that the epithelial cells are present in the intestine in order to aid the digestion process that will break fructose into smaller molecular fragments, and this leads to symptoms that cause discomfort, to say the least.

Despite the fact that this disorder occurs in one for every ten thousand people, the truth is that there is no cure for this disorder, and as frustrating as this is, the patient will have to constantly monitor the foods that he or she eats for the rest of her life. Yes, that really sucks…

Symptoms for Fructose Intolerance

Here are some common symptoms that are associated with fructose intolerance:

1) Bloating of the stomach

2) Diarrhea

3) Constipation

4) Flatulence

5) Stomach Pain (due to muscle spasms)

6) Aching eyes

7) Fuzzy head

8) Fatigue

9) Depression (which occurs because hormones and neurotransmitters cannot be synthesized)

Diagnosis & Treatment

Doctors normally determine the presence of a food disorder by giving patients a hydrogen breath test, checking the levels of methane (and the lack of hydrogen) in the body.

Yet if you're expecting the doctor to come up with a cure, there isn't any. No magic pills here. The only option is a fructose free diet and very simply, this means the complete elimination of all foods that contains fructose. And if you do not heed this 'prevention is better than cure' approach, you'll have to deal with the aforementioned symptoms again!

In Closing

Extreme prejudice. It works for both religious and food intolerances. And why? Let me reiterate: in the interests of self-preservation!
