Over this last week, I've been working on a project on American politics and its history in general, and really enjoyed it. Also, protests in the form of Occupy Wall Street which is raising eyebrows everywhere, it seems as if Americans are sick and tired of dirty politicians, and their self-serving ways.
Something that most Indians of my generation gave up on in the 1990s, and probably will never find it in our lifetime… who knows?
And it's not surprising that people feel "allergic" towards the ways of Wall Street, and that has become a part of a greater system that they can't stomach anymore.
Perhaps a metaphor for the proverbial food allergy … yup, enough is enough!
Food Allergies
In most cases, a food allergy is often a reaction to a certain food protein, present in the food itself. Unlike other types of allergies, this is an adverse reaction which is a result of the body's immune system considering the protein to be a harmful substance.
Typically, there are proteins or certain parts of protein that cannot be digested by the body, and thanks to the production of Immunoglobin E (IgE) antibodies, the immune system springs into action as it thinks that the protein is harmful.
These are the very same reactions that are a result of the identification of the bacteria, toxins and viruses, and which have entered your body.
Some of the common foods that cause this allergic reaction are:
#1: Shellfish (crab, lobster, shrimp)
#2: Milk
#3: Eggs
#4: Peanuts
#5: Tree nuts
#6: Wheat
#7: Soy
The age group that is most affected by food allergies are normally children who outgrow these allergies as they grow older. And there are some folks like me who cannot handle shellfish still…
So how do you identify whether you have a food allergy?
Let's look at some common food allergy symptoms that occur when any of these foods are eaten.
Food Allergy Symptoms
The allergic reactions that are caused by the immune system can be mild to strong, and can vary from person to person but one can be sure that these symptoms begin within two hours of eating the food that the individual is resistant to.
Common allergy symptoms to all of these foods are a hoarse voice, hives and wheezing.
So here are some of the food allergy symptoms that can occur depending on the food:
- Diarrhea
- Runny nose
- Difficulty when swallowing
- Itching of the mouth, throat, eyes, skin, or any area
- Fainting
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Nasal congestion
- Patches of itchy, scaly skin (atopic dermatitis);
- Blisters or peely skin
- Swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, and tongue
- Running out of breath quickly
- Stomach cramps
- Vomiting
While most of these symptoms are not necessarily life-threatening, the strong symptoms are blocked airways and low blood pressure. So these are also symptoms to watch out for.
In visiting a doctor, they will diagnose your allergy to the food by administering a challenge, blood or skin test. However, there is no fixed method to determine whether you have a food allergy or not.
Finally, there is only one way to treat a food allergy; and that is to avoid the food completely.
In Closing
Yup, if the government, corporations and Wall Street want to survive then they will have to live up to the demands of people – unfortunately, it's just not feasible to avoid a pissed-off nation.
