Cosmetic surgery for men: Top five procedures in the UK

Did you know that men accounted for ten per cent of all cosmetic surgery procedures that took place in the UK during2011? That’s right; audit figures from The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), reveal that 4298 men went under the knife last year – but which surgeries proved most popular? Let’s take a look:
Are you unhappy with the size, shape and look of your nose? If so, you’re not alone. A total of 1,043 men had a full nose correction in 2011, making rhinoplasty the most popular procedure for men that year. Surprising? Well, maybe not considering the amount of male celebs who are rumoured to have had a little work done.
Breast reduction surgery
Gynaecomastia is the overgrowth of male breast tissue. It can cause small breast buds or fuller woman-like breasts to form and might explain why 790 men had breast reduction surgery last year. During the operation, liposuction is used to remove excess fat cells from the body. These fat cells are broken down using a special saline solution and are then drained away through a small tube.
Blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery
Blepharoplasty is the second most-popular cosmetic procedure for women and the third most popular for men – with 684 males opting for the surgery. It is designed to remove bags from underneath the eyes and is a great way to improve sagging eyelids. There are three main types of blepharoplasty surgery, but each works to create a younger, more youthful and less-tired appearance.
Otoplasty / ear correction
If you feel you need to hide away because of your ears, or cover them with your hair – otoplasty can help. It’s the medical term for ear correction surgery and was carried out on 521 men last year. There are several different techniques that can be used, depending on whether you have large or protruding ears, so it’s essential to attend a pre-surgery consultation to discuss your needs.
As already mentioned, liposuction can be used to reduce the size of an enlarged chest – but it can also work on other parts of the body. Many people choose to improve the look of their thighs, legs or tummy, for instance, and have the fat cells drained away. A total of 511 men had liposuction in 2011 and several more had smart lipo procedures such as liposculture which can give the appearance of a six pack – think paparazzo Darryn Lyons who appeared on Celebrity Big Brother 8.
Cosmetic surgery is widely available for both men and women, but would you alter your appearance in any way?
