8 Tips for Exercising While on Vacation

Posted Dec 15 2012 12:40pm

After months of prepping, dieting and exercising you are finally off on your dream vacation. You want to take lots of photos of yourself having fun with your newly refined body. But all those buffet lines and mixed drinks are going to undo everything you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

No worries. Plan ahead with these easy steps and keep your body intact on vacation.

Find a Gym

Make sure you book a room in a hotel with a fitness room so you can keep up with your workout routine. These services are usually free and can help you squeeze in a quick workout before you head out for the day.

Staying with a friend? No problem. Go online and find nearby gyms that offer free daily passes online. That way you have a place to work out while you are in town.

Explore Google Maps

Find your vacation spot on Google Maps and research the area. Look for nearby running trails or parks. Going for a jog or long walk is a great way to see a new city from a different angle. It’s a win-win.

Pack Your Bands

Elastic tubing workout bands fit nicely in a suitcase or day bag. You can get an incredible all-over workout in about 30 minutes with these bands. You can even do these exercises in the comfort of your room while you’re watching a movie on television.

Go to Prison

The so-called prison exercise is a great method for obtaining a great workout while on vacation. The term comes from the idea that you do as many exercises as possible in a limited space like a hotel room. You can go online for ideas, but basically you want to do as many sit-ups, push-ups, wall squats, burpees, and mountain climbers as possible.

Sign-up to Race

Some major cities have large running communities. Check online to see what races are taking place while you are in town and sign up for a 5k. It will give you chance to meet new people and bring home some souvenirs like a race t-shirt or race number.

Hit the Pool

Everyone knows that swimming is a great workout. Find out if your hotel has a pool and be sure to pack a suit. Maybe you’re staying at a beach? A safe ocean swim can burn a crazy amount of calories. After several laps, you’ll be ready to start your day of fun.

Rent a Bike

Many vacation spots are close to bicycle rentals. Riding a bike not only gives you a great workout, but will save you money on gas as you ride around and explore your vacation city.

Take a Hike

Sure, you want to lie around and do nothing on vacation, but don’t let the idea of a hike weigh you down. A short hike at a nearby landmark could prove to be a fun adventure that could lead you on journey to discover hidden secrets like waterfalls, private swimming spots or beautiful scenery.

Have Fun

Now that the workout is out of the way, you can begin your day of rest and relaxation with no guilt. Remember to try to make your vacation workouts a fun and memorable part of your holiday.
