3 Fun Ways College Students can Get into Shape this Summer

So you've finally finished your first year of college. While you've gained all A'sóbravoó you've also gained a few extra unwanted pounds. If one of your main goals is to wipe away those freshmen 15 this summer but the gym terrifies you (or perhaps you can't afford a membership), there are still some activities you can do that not only help burn the fat, but are also fun and typically free. Even non-students can indulge in these activities we've listed below.

Swim

What better way to escape the heat and enjoy some sun than by taking a dip in the pool. But rather than lounging around and working on your tan, use this opportunity to squeeze in some exercise. Swimming is one of the best ways to get into shape since water is resistance to airóthis means you can burn more without straining as much in a gym. This is why children typically come home starving after an afternoon at the pool. They're burning calories while having fun. There are several ways to maximize your experience however: you can simply swim laps solo or race against a friend; you can play games like you were a kid with your friends (the kind that involve quick strides like Shark or Marco Polo); or you can look up YouTube videos like this one and learn a few water aerobic exercise moves to get more out of your workout.

Dance

Summer is the party season there is no questioning that. But if there's music playing at the weekend house party or you decide to go out with a group of friends to the local club, make sure to dance your heart out. There's a reason why hip hop cardio classes and Zumba are so popular: you can burn calories simply by busting a moveóand it's a lot more fun than spin class. So don't be timid and stand on the sideline; dance when you're out. You can also make some new summer memories: if you and your friends have never gone salsa dancing for example, then make plans to go.

Play Sports

Lastly, get in some much needed activity by playing sports. Whether you decide to join an organized community league, form a team with friends, or just play recreationally every once in a while, playing a high endurance sport like flag football, basketball, soccer or even something wacky like kickball or Frisbee golf once a week can diminish the boredom and the pounds.
