The Many Benefits of a Meditation Retreat

Posted by Nirmala N.

1) It helps you focus without the general distractions you might be accustomed to.

2) It helps you build resilience, which you can take with you when you go back to the "real world."

3) It helps you stay in the moment rather than thinking about the past and future.

4) It's a wonderful, nurturing reprieve--a time to let yourself relax completely.

5) It's great for helping you clarify your purpose in life.

6) It's a lovely getaway, especially before huge events.

7) It helps you learn to really be with yourself, even in times of distress or happiness.

8) It leads to self-acceptance.

9) It calms your heart and nervous system.

10) It helps you perceive things more clearly.

Meditation retreats, both silent and not, which range from three days to several months, are usually offered by your local meditation center, so check in with them if you're interested in participating in this life-changing activity.

I've been wanting to learn more about meditation, and how to do it on my own in some of life's tougher moments. Can you take this kind of knowledge away from these events? And where can you find places that host these in the northeast?
Kristen, Before doing an intensive retreat, I would suggest building up a meditation practice first, even if it's just 20-30 minutes a day. I personally love Vipassana meditation, so you might want to consider looking up Insight Meditation Society centers--they're all over the place, and I believe they started in the northeastern area of the U.S.
Hi Kristen, I do agreee with Nirmala. Its best to learn and practise for few minutes everyday in you own home before you go to a retreat. You can practise breathing techniques taught by the Art of Living Foundation (www.artofliving.org) and further on go for any of their retreat courses. Retreat couses are good, you are away from the daily hum-drum, having good ayurvedic sattvic food, practising meditative tehniques, singing and dancing, being in knowledge ...... You can also have your own sanctuary in you home, I have read that candles, incense, music, soft lights are very soothing
