I read a really interesting book recently called 8 Minute Meditation. The author, a seasoned meditator and Buddhist scholar, presents a very practical, American approach to meditation. Fitting in just 8 minutes a day (or as he likes to say, just the amount of time it takes for 2 TV commercial breaks). He recommends consistently meditating for 8 minutes per day for 8 weeks to start to build a meditation practice, and walks readers through a week-by-week rotation of meditation techniques so you can find one that works for you. I definitely recommend it- much more practical and achievable than most of the other meditation books out there.
