After a race, massages are a great way to get rid of all that 'junk' that accumulates in the muscles and loosen the knots that are starting to form. I'd like to get massages after all my hard workouts too, but I can't afford that luxury. So I try to be diligent about giving myself a self-massage after particularly strenuous speed and strength workouts. Admittedly, it's hard to massage my shoulders and back unless I get a friend to do it for me, but I can at least get to my quads, hamstrings, glutes with my own hands as well as with the many tools out there (e.g., foam rollers, etc.). The TP massage ball is particularly good at almost simulating the pressure from a human finger, though nothing beats a massage from a trained massage therapist! The only downside to self-massage is that I don't achieve a sense of total relaxation since one part of my body is exerting pressure/doing work on another part. But at least I'm expediting muscle repair and recovery.
