How to relax before a massage?

This might sound like a silly question, but I'm wondering, is there a way to relax before a massage?

The last time I got a massage, aftewards the masseuse told me that I have trouble really relaxing. I was on a boat, so I chalked it up to the movement of it (there were rough seas), but I've always known inside that it wasn't that bad.

I'm going for a 90-minute hot stone massage this weekend and want to make sure I get the most out of it. Do you know of a way that I may be able to relax before I make go there?

I agree with Pixie - I'm a massage therapist and I still have trouble relaxing when I get massages.  A lot of the time I have to remind myself to relax or I tense up again when I'm not paying attention to it. Relaxation breathing helps. Also, imagining that you are in a "special place" (on a beach, in a forest, wherever you feel most relaxed) will help. The hot shower/steam room will help your muscles loosen up before the massage, but if your mind won't let you relax during the massage it might not help.

 I also agree that it could have been the rocking boat... That would definitely effect your relaxation!

Well, you could take a hot shower with water pik, or a hot tub. However, I think that it's the masseuse's job to help you relax! Maybe she was playing annoying music or using invigorating scents, like mint. Maybe she was just not accomplished. Hopefulle, this masseuse will know what she's doing.
I totally understand how you feel, Kristen, as I'm someone who gets massage frequently but I also tend to have trouble relaxing. I would strongly suggest doing something like going into the steam room or jacuzzi (if the place has such a thing). I would definitely try to get there on the early side, at least, and maybe take about five to ten minutes beforehand to do some deep breathing. Even something as simple as listening to meditative music on your iPod before you get there can help you ease into the massage a bit more.
