I am 58 years old, and I was diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis) in the early 1990's. It was under control, except that I lost my balance and fell every once in awhile and had to eventually begin using a cane. About six years ago, my arms got weak and my hands became uncoordinated. I was working as a medical transcriptionist, and eventually had to quit and go on disability. Four years ago, my legs got weaker and I began falling a lot, so I started using a Rollator. I also applied at that time for a Saint Francis Service dog. After a 3-year wait, I was partnered with Montana (Monty), a fabulous black Lab who is with me wherever I go. He walks on my left, and on my right I use a forearm crutch. He has kept me from falling more times than I can count. He is also able to help me get up off the floor, get the phone or my husband in an emergency, and pick up things I drop. One more thing about Montana I wanted to include here. Before I got him, I didn't want to leave the house or be around anyone but my DH. Three months after Montana came to live with us, I was asking DH to take us places instead of begging him to let me stay home. Montana gave me back something I had lost, which was my self-confidence. I enjoy reading, online blogs and my MS forum, Facebook, knitting, backyard birdwatching, and gardening. I also started taking an MS Yoga class that I truly love and have gotten some benefit from.
