What is the best way to choose a Martial Art form for learning self defense?

Try Some Sample Classes. I do believe that many martial arts schools will let you take a sample class or at least watch one. Check out a bunch of different styles before you decide. Some styles are focused more on punching and kicking and some favor grappling or using the opponents weight against them. Do some research - some styles were formulated for people with certain body types. This is not to say you couldn't do that style...but, e.g., when I took a specific style karate many years ago, I felt it wasn't natural for me. It was more meant for someone who was shorter, stockier, and had more brute muscle strength. I like forms that favor speed and deflection over strength, since I will never be the strongest.
