I used to go to a boxing class and it was a blast. It was a real boxing class with gloves and bags, not a variation like kickboxing or "boxing aerobics". It's a fun way to mix up your workout. As for losing weight, it's heavy on cardio so yes, I'd say it would help. Our class didn't focus on strength, but that was just one instance. Try it!
