Joint locking vs. joint breaking

Posted Oct 01 2008 9:25pm

Today Karl sent all the instructors in Fugakukai a very good reminder of how we teach the things we teach. Part of the mail instructed us to pass it along to those concerned in our groups, so here it is:
To whom it may concern, Our organization is a martial arts organization. We teach joint locks WE DO NOT TEACH JOINT BREAKING. A JOINT LOCK DOES NOT MEAN JOINT BREAK. ARM BAR AND JOINT LOCK MEANS IMMOBILIZATION OF THE PERSON AND THE JOINT IN A WAY THAT ONLY UKE (THE RECEIVER) CAN HURT HIMSELF. IN THE HEAT OF SELF DEFENSE A PERSON BEING LOCKED CAN DISLOCATE HIS / HER JOINT WITH IMPRUDENT ACTIVITY. THEREFORE ANY PERSON WHO REGULARLY TEACHES THE BREAKING OR DISLOCATION OF THE JOINTS OF ANOTHER PERSON SHOULD SEEK ANOTHER VENUE TO PRACTICE IN. SLOW APPLICATION OF A JOINT LOCK OR BAR IS ADEQUATE ENOUGH TO ACHIEVE AND DEMONSTRATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PROPER IMMOBILIZATION TECHNIQUE. CASUAL DISCUSSION OF DANGEROUS BREAKING TECHNIQUES, BY RANKED PEOPLE IN FRONT OF BEGINNERS AND LOW RANKED PEOPLE CAN LEAD TO UNNECESSARY INJURY. WE HAVE PRIDE IN OUR ARTS WHY SULLY THEM AS OTHERS DO. RESPECTFULLY KEG
PLEASE SEND THIS E-MAIL TO ALL CONCERNED ON YOUR LIST
Thanks, Karl. That is a very good and direct explanation of some of the things I’ve been trying to remind folks of for a while:
