How Do You Stick to a Regular Exercise Program?

Posted Dec 11 2010 12:00am

I saw a recent thread on KarateForums about helping people stick to a regular exercise programme .  The posts on there are interesting, and got me thinking about different ways to ensure that you get the exercise you need.

The most popular techniques to help with sticking to an exercise program seem to be:

1. Set aside specific times – This helps because it ensures that you keep your schedule clear and don’t forget/get distracted doing other things.

2. Choose an activity that you enjoy – If you’re looking forward to riding your bike, going swimming, or going to Karate, then you’re less likely to make excuses than if you’re dreading a session on the treadmill.

3. Work out with a buddy – That way, you can nag your friends when they’re feeling lazy, and they can nag you when you’re the one who doesn’t want to train.

I have no difficulty sticking to my powerlifting training during the summer months, but our kitchen is freezing cold during the winter, so it’s hard to get motivated to go in there at this time of year. So, I’d add that making a welcoming exercise environment is a good one!   A friend of mine bought workout DVDs, but only used them a few times because he got sick of tripping over things in the living room. Choosing the right environment, or the right exercises for your house, can be a big help!

How do you stay motivated and ensure you stick to your exercise program?
