Fitness Friday 4 – The one with the aches

Posted Jan 21 2011 12:00am

Time is flying by so fast these days!  I guess it’s because the festive season is over so it’s all work, work, work! Still, things are going well.

Why I’m doing Fitness Friday

I’m a weight class athlete, and I’m doing fitness Friday to encourage me to log my training.  I don’t want to lose weight, but I don’t want to gain it either.  I’m trying to stay well under 48KG (that’s the weight class I’m in).

My scales put me at 45.2KG at the moment, which means I’ve lost weight this week.  I have been training hard though, so that’s understandable.

My fitness friday update

I’ve been enjoying using the heavy bag, and making (slow) progress on my spinning back roundhouse.  I also restarted Ripptoes lifting programme, although I’m expecting to have to modify it slightly – we’ve upgraded to to an Olympic bar and the smallest plates in the set are 1.25KG, so until I get some microplates my linear progression is going to be adding (in theory) 7.5kg/week on squats, and 7.5kg/fortnight on bench – which is a little rapid for me!

I’ve started the programme this time at at 70% of my 5 rep max, so I’ll probably max out pretty quickly and then just repeat the same weight for a few sessions but do 6 reps, then 7, and so on until I’m ready to go up.  It’s not as motivating as microloading, but at least it’s something.  Considering I’ve already been lifting a while and I’m just coming back after a few months of illness and injury I don’t expect rapid gains this time anyway.  I’m going to give Ripptoes three or four months to get me “back up to speed” then probably switch to Westside – I just know that right now I’ve lost a lot of strength so back to basics is best.

I ended up training Wednesday / Thursday / Friday this week, and have to take some workout photos tomorrow, so will be “working out” then too. My normal plan is to spread my four sessions out across the week, but that didn’t work out this time, so right now I’m a fair bit stiffer and more tired than normal, but things are going well.

Tips I would like to share

Make sure you’re getting enough sleep!  When you increase your activity levels, you need to get quality rest to give your body time to heal.  If you’re not sleeping enough then you’re tired, groggy, depriving yourself of healing time, and probably stressed – which can lead to bad diet choices too.  It’s amazing how getting some quality sleep time (NOT just lying in bed for longer, feeling restless) can help you feel healthier.
