I just found this article linked to from MarathonGuide.com (very good site, by the way). It details the reasons why some college students run long distances, and participate in marathons.
I've been running for 36 years because I enjoy it. I was born with a stiff skeleton and can't play sports that require quick response, jumps, etc., but I can do distance running because it I get into a rhythm and just go for miles.
