Who should you believe: random doctors or random co-runners?

Here's an interesting article Mark sent me about athletes' food intake. It basically states that many athletes are gullible and that eating special foods (maybe such as my salt tablets, gus, blocks, etc) are not necessary, but rather good, "normal" foods. It quotes random doctors and their beliefs and also gives little testimonies from elite runners/Ironmaners.
Well...this information doesn't help my ignorant self. If some other long distance runner tells me that I should eat or take something because it'll help my muscles/endurance, etc, I'll most likely do it (unless it costs more than $17).
