There is only one reason I signed up to run this one. PR or bust. Last April , I ran at Umstead again last April and was going for the pr, but the warm humid day killed any chance of that. I was on pace for 5 laps but I was toast by then and there was no turning things around. Still finished a respectable 25+ hours but it got ugly.
I began looking for somewhere else to go and try again this year and was happy to see this 1st year event come up. It is within driving distance in Maryland and flat. You never know what you will get weather wise in April but it looks like I will get lucky with the temps forecast from the low 40's to the upper 60's. At least I'll have a legitimate shot at it.
This year has gone well for me running wise with all the marathon training since last Sept and I ran my most miles ever in 2012 and have stayed on that pace this year. 3 years now of consistent injury free running and I am in about the best shape I've been in a very many years. After shattering my 50 mile pr in January and having run well all the way down to 5k my confidence is pretty high that I can pull this off. Of course it is 100 miles and a lot can happen over that distance but I hope to use my experience and make it s a success. The pr is 23:15 from Rocky Raccon in 2007, over 6 years ago. I know I don't have too many more years to realistically go for many pr's so I am taking advantage of things now while things are going so well. I will be satisfied with anything under 23:00 but I'm going BIG. Hoping for something AMAZING !
Hopefully Amy and Jenn can keep you posted on FB with updates along the way. I will try to be in contact with them as I can.
