I've been slowly coming out of my holiday-sugar-induced coma back to the real world. Four days into 2011, I can already tell this year is going to kick my butt. But, a lot of it it all is going to be worth it in the end.
So, without further adeu, here are the goals I am hoping to slam down this year (in no particular order).
Pass my comprehensive exams in May. Believe it or not, this requires studying for... well... pretty much now until the exams begin on May 16th. The exams last from May 16th through the 25th and I am hoping to come out relatively unscathed. After I pass, I'll officially be ABD (all but dissertation)! I will also begin to almost be a real person.
Submit at least three papers for publication. After I (hopefully) pass comps in May, I need to try and crank out as many publications as I can as quickly as possible. I'll be going on the job market for academic jobs by August 2012, and I know that is going to come up way too fast given how long the publication process takes.
Successfully complete my project with my undergrad research team. I've been managing a research lab with 20 undergraduate students with the help of my advisor, Christina, and Ali. It's been quite the undertaking, but I know we can get a good project out of this all.
Keep running during comps! This might actually be the hardest goal... I know I am going to get sucked into studying especially in April when things hit crunch time, but I need to keep running to keep my sanity.
Successfully complete The HOPE Express Relay Run. I know my amazing teammates who I got to meet via teleconference last week won't let me NOT meet this goal. They're incredible!
Run 1,100 miles. I'd like this to be higher, but I'm keeping things realistic with my Spring mileage being much lower than usual. I've signed up for the Tall Mom1,000 Mile Challenge to keep me on track.
Complete at minimum 12 races. I've signed up for the Run for the Bling of It Challenge to make sure I meet this goal. Right now, I already have 5 races officially on my schedule and am looking for more to fill in the gaps. They are the NYC Half Marathon (3/20), the DC Triathlon (6/19), the Buckeye Half Marathon (8/28), the Akron Half Marathon (9/24), and... the Chicago Marathon (10/9)!
Complete at least one all-trail race. I run fairly consistently with a trail group, and need to finally try racing on this kind of terrain. It will be a great new challenge.
Run a race with 7:xx min/mile splits. I came so (so so so so) close at the Labor of Love 5 Miler this year, completing the race in 40:28 which is 8:06 min/mile. So close, yet so far.
Race. Shorter. Distances. I am terrified by the 5k and 10k distances because I don't have a lot of faith in my speed for short distances. I need to get over this quickly if I want to...
Run a 1:50 half marathon. Current PR = 1:55:49
Run a 4:10 marathon. Current PR = 4:24:57
There are, of course, other goals about my family/friends, but those will come as I talk about this year I am sure. Here's to the ultimate pursuit this year... keeping my sanity with school AND running at the same time!
