What To Do When You Are Chronically Constipated

Posted Mar 31 2011 7:37am

Many Lyme patients suffer from chronic constipation due in part to our damaged digestive systems. Some doctors say that you need to be "moving" once a day; others say it is fine if you are going every other day or three times a week. I read once that normalcy means going twice a day. [laugh] I would like to see that happen!

I have struggled with constipation since 1999. I have tried everything--eating more fiber, drinking more water, exercising . . . no luck! Eventually, I had to be placed on a prescription form of Miralax that helped some for a while. Let me make it clear however: I DON'T encourage putting synthetic medications into your body unless absolutely necessary! My body is already toxic and adding synthetics just keeps it toxic. A concern I had when discussing this medication with my doctor was that my liver would filter this medication as it is does in many cases with medications. I didn't want to put more weight on my liver; it was already overworked in trying to detox the toxins that the Lyme produces along with my iron overload. However, the doctor explained that the Miralax moves through your digestive system as food would, and that this medication is not filter by your liver like other medications. When it reaches your colon, a chemical reaction occurs pulling water from your colon into your stool. When constipated, this often means that as our stool passes through our digestive system, it is not retaining enough water to move through.

But before you try Miralax (again, if you don't need to, I wouldn't start) I have a trick that works for almost everyone that I know: use CALM Magnesium. It can be purchased in most any health food store. Until I started taking CALM, I wasn't seeing the results that I desired. Today, I am regular and go everyday. Start off with 1/2 teaspoon of CALM and drink plenty of water throughout the day. If that doesn't work, take 1 teaspoon the next day. Work your way up until you see some results.I take a tablespoon a day. I have shared this information with both friends and family, and haven't had anyone, who I shared this information with, say it didn't in some way help them. It is unreal the number of people who suffer from constipation on a regular basis. What does this say about our American diets?

Whether you are constipated or not, taking CALM increases our magnesium levels; we don't get nearly enough through our diets. Magnesium is helpful in relaxing our muscles and helping them function correctly. Since our colon is a muscle that involuntarily contracts and relaxes; it is helpful in getting it moving properly. Sometimes, our colons "malfunction" and don't contract and relax as they should. Give CALM at try! You just may be "MOVING" [snicker, snicker] in the right direction.
