When I walked into the door of Summit Physical Therapy, I was fairly certain that I was dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction. I wouldn't have been surprised; IC patients usually show that their muscles are contracted due to the pain . . . however, it is possible to have the pelvic floor dysfunction cause the pain. So, we’re back to the unsurpassed question, “What came first, the chicken or the egg?”
My readings were worse than I thought, and I know that this will make some of you raise your brow, but I was satisfied the readings were poor. Why? Because for once, someone found that I have a substantial medical issue that may be causing pain.
In a relaxed state, one’s reading should be a 1 on a scale of 1-10; mine read at a 7.5. The higher the reading, the more contracted the muscles are. This means that in my most relaxed state, my muscles are significantly contracted and are not relaxing.
The therapist had me practice some muscle control in the office using a monitor. Boy, were my readings all over the place! I had absolutely very little control. So, she sent me home with exercises to do every day.
I felt some relief leaving the therapist’s office, but then came the day I was to practice my muscle contractions and relaxations. Now it seems, not only are my muscles in my bladder area more relaxed, but now other areas of my pelvic floor are in constant contraction. I think we have A LOT of work ahead of us as it seems my entire pelvic floor is malfunctioning. Oh, joy!
Did You Know?
Once one suffers from a bladder infection, the muscles in the pelvic floor can get stuck in contraction? Wow! Never knew that!
