i believe you, but my tommy gun don't

Posted Aug 09 2011 1:15pm

Yesterday I came home to a bunch of mail from United Health Care, which is nothing new or unfamiliar lately. Usually I receive checks to bring to my Lyme specialist, Dr. Cameron, covering the office visits I made when receiving IV Rocephin treatment. Since they have refused to cover, these checks don’t include the payments for prescription drugs and diagnostic methods. But today, they did. And they were quite a pocketful. The checks totaled around $10,000 which would mean that UHC is now in fact covering my Lyme disease treatment. How and why? I’m not exactly sure yet. I’ve put in a lot of effort and letters and contact with government offices and the NYS insurance department, so I don’t know what exactly changed UHC’s mind.

As excited and happy as I am, I’m not jumping the gun quite yet. I still have the question in my mind whether or not they can revoke these checks and still wind up charging me. I don’t want to get too happy and find out that this was a mistake, or it’s not exactly what I think it is. I seem to do that to myself a lot with this Lyme experience, and it only piles on the stress when things don’t turn out the way I expected. I’m hoping for the best and I’m expecting, well nothing really because I have no idea what to expect anymore. Until I get some form of documentation from UHC stating that they are in fact paying for my treatment, I still have to keep my guard up on the situation. I’d like to believe it’s true, but my gut won’t let me trust it completely.
