Here We Go Again!

Posted Apr 02 2009 12:28pm
The past two weeks we have been riding the roller coaster going from one "thrill" to another.....Did I mention I don't like roller coasters??? Yesterday was no exception. I had an eye doctor appointment with Joel's eye specialist. My LLMD mentioned a long time ago that I should be checked out by someone who understood Lyme...our eyes are not spared by the spirochetes need to feed and destroy.....Joel had talked his Dr. at his last appointment and discovered that his 23 year old son has been trying to get well from Lyme for the past 9 yrs. It was a sad but familiar story of doctors telling him "we don't have Lyme in our state.....he is just a rebellious teen who can't cope with life....it is all in his head......he just needs to get out more and learn to cope with stress in his life....Lyme does not cause many problems, he is not really sick." You Lymies and people with CFS, etc. have heard it all before unless you are one of the rare people who got lucky the first go around in the medical community. Joel's doctor was not taking any new patients but said he would gladly see me and check me out for Lyme damage to my eyes. I really did not think I needed an eye specialist, but once again God was one step ahead of me.

I expected to be scolded for not coming in sooner for a new much needed prescription but neither Joel or I expected to be told I have cataracts in both eyes and the pressure test for glaucoma was at the highest number for normal. Both conditions are in the beginning stages of disease, but 2 1/2 hrs and many tests later, we went home feeling a bit numb, and with a new prescription that will help but not correct my eyesight. We won't know the results of the tests for glaucoma for a couple of days, but my thinking (and hope) is that the pressure is "only from Lyme". Either way, for now we wait...for the cataracts to get worse and if it is glaucoma...we wait again for that to get worse. No one mentioned waiting for things to get better.

This turn of events is sobering...maddening...and a bit scary too. My body has worked so hard to keep functioning and has tried its best but it is wearing down. Cataracts at age 61? It happens but I don't know of anyone it has happened to. Glaucoma at my age...? I am thinking that I may have been born 61 yrs ago, but my body is older than that due to all the damage that has occurred. Joel may be turning 63, but he is really married to an older woman~ !!!
