for my microbiology class we have been assigned 25 random case studies based on a variety of diseases. here’s one i got:
“A 54-yr old female comes into the doctor’s office in Westchester County, New York complaining of headaches, dizziness, severe fatigue, fever and muscle and joint pain. When you do an examination, you find an irregular round red rash that is spreading out from a white center, like a bull’s eye. The woman has not been anywhere recently, but she does enjoy spending time in the garden and taking her dogs for walks in the woods that border her yard. ‘The walks have become fun again,’ she says, ‘now I use that Advantix stuff to keep the ticks from eating the dogs alive. It used to be that I would pull two or three of them off every time the dogs went outside.’ The doctor prescribed a 14-day course of doxycycline to kill the organism that is causing the disease. What does the woman have and what is the causative agent?”
all i read was “A 54-yr old female comes into the doctor’s office in Westchester County, New York” and i right away knew the answer was going to by Lyme disease. i guess that’s what happens when you live in a disease’s most endemic area, and are suffering from it.
