Norvasc and Pregnancy

Posted Mar 24 2010 8:38am

A lot of friends are teasing me that maybe this vacation would help us have our baby number two. Which I would gamely answer that we are hoping for that and they should pray with us. Right now I am trying to research if there Norvasc has a bad side effect on the fetus just like coumadin. Fortunately there was none. Only a big possibility of miscarriage.

This is what I found about the drug at this link .

Norvasc was given a pregnancy Category C rating because of potential problems in animal studies. When given to pregnant rabbits and rats, Norvasc caused increased miscarriages. Norvasc also caused labor to be longer in rats. Norvasc did not cause any birth defects in animal studies.

However, it is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines the same way that humans do. Therefore, a pregnancy Category C medicine may be given to a pregnant woman if the healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the pregnant woman outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.
