SkinnySongs

| I think that if skinny songs works for someone, then go for it. I can see that it might be offensive to someone, but let's face it. Even if you know you are a hottie, most people are not going to feel like a hottie at 200 pounds. It's not that being skinny is a must for being a hottie, if fact skinny is often not hot in itself. Being a hottie is being healthy...and skinny and 200 pounds are not healthy and are therefore not hot! |

I thought I'd give some perspective as the originator of the idea and the author of the lyrics. About seven months ago I hit an all time high, I had gone from a size 8 to a size 14. Facing my 50th birthday, I did not want to enter the 'back half' not feeling good about myself, and at an unhealthy weight. Since music has always been a motivator to me, it occurred to me that maybe there would be great songs I could listen to while walking, or even in my car, that would motivate me to succeed, much in the way 'I will survive' by Gloria Gaynor got many of us through a breakup. I couldn't find any, so I wrote SkinnySongs. You have to take these with a grain of salt, even the title was picked to be catchy but trust me I am not nor will I ever be skinny. They lyrics are supposed to be motivational in that they are like 'before and after' pictures -- but again you have to think of them like a musical, not like specific self-help instructions. And note, in every song, the woman decides for herself, to take charge of her own life, to exercise, to realize it takes months to reach the goal and then a lifelong commitment to maintain -- and I don't mention any specific age OR weight, except in one song -- where she goes from a 16 to an 8! I don't think that is putting forth an unhealthy goal. Ultimately, this music has helped me return to a size 8 and a very healthy body weight, and I' hearing from other (mostly) women every day about how much they are enjoying the music too and finding that it helps them through their weak spots. In the end, remember, it is artistic expression, I wrote the music for me and women like me, and the great thing here is if the music is not appealing to you there is no need to use it. Some people are motivated to lose weight because of their cholesterol levels, some because of doctors orders. Some, like me, became motivated to look and feel better about themselves and get back into their normal, adult clothes that are a reminder that they have reached an unhealthy weight. If that's you then you might enjoy SkinnySongs. If not, I encourage you to find whatever motivation works for you -- because whatever goal you have and whatever path you take, we all have bumps in the road and weak moments, and it is often helpful to have found something positive to get you through those. |
I knew that many others would be reviewing the CD and it was my intention to stand out from the crowd by taking a different perspective on writing about SkinnySongs - mostly because of my impression that the music was catered to women. I did not intend to write a review of the CD but instead a review of the PR process.
That plan changed when I finally got around to listening to the music! This is a quality disc. The production is excellent, the voice talent superb and while at times a little corny, the lyrics are spot on. Yes, most of the songs (”I’m a Hottie Now”, “Think I’ll Go To Saks”, etc) are targeted directly at women, but despite that this is music that anyone battling in a weight loss journey will enjoy. I’m not normally a top-40 kind of music guy, but I found many of the tunes very catchy and different enough that the CD doesn’t get old.
