I highly recommend Joaquin Miller Park to those who live from Hayward to the Oakland area that don't want to take a long drive up to Mount Tam or Point Reyes. Joaquin Miller Park is very convenient for those of us in the area that would like to get in a run/hike after work without being stuck in traffic.
This place is very picturesque; one doesn't realize one is in Oakland when on the trails. The trails are in excellent shape, in particular, the Bay View and Sunset trails are excellent for running, they are wide...but one has to be aware of ones surroundings due to the occasional mountain biker.
The Big Tree Trials are very rugged, hilly, and fun to hike due to the Sequoias. The Ravine and Creek Trails are good for those that enjoy being enveloped by nature.
Generally, (from what I've experienced to date), this place is a family friendly environment with a grassy knoll camp area where families are camping/relaxing. Additionally there is a healthy amount of hikers/walkers/runners on the trails (not overly crowded).
Bonus: Redwood Regional Park and Chabot Space/Science Center are up the road from Joaquin Miller Park.

So, my first run didn't kill me. I didn't feel like my entire body was
going to fall apart or that my lungs were on fire. My neck, ears, feet
and shins all felt fine (those were the body parts that just couldn't
take running in the past). In fact, at the end of my run, I felt like it
