insurance approval

Posted Dec 01 2009 12:00am

Ah, insurance ... while I am incredibly thankful that we do have really good insurance coverage, it's not always easy to wait for approval. I've been so used to going to the doctor, showing my card, paying my copay, and that's it.  But for the transplant, we needed to wait for approval.

At first BCBS didn't approve going to Pittsburgh for the transplant because it wasn't one of their approved centers.  U of M was, so we resigned ourselves to the fact that as a second choice, it would be ok.  After all, it was 4 hours closer, and for the 6 years that Anna's clinic was there we always received top notch care.

Then we got the welcome pack from Pittsburgh, and I was confused.  A call to our transplant coordinator revealed that BCBS had approved going to Pittsburgh after all.  We hadn't received that letter yet, it came two days later.   We were approved because Pittsburgh is the leading transplant center for MSUD patients.

So now, Anna's scheduled for her first evaluation the week of January 11th!
