We have received many greetings from people far away who are now enjoying a white Christmas with good food and all that belongs. Here in Ethiopia December 24’th and 25’th are ordinary working days. We will celebrate on January 7’th according to the Ethiopian calendar.
Today 25/12 we had three babies with congenital malformations on the operation program. Two newborn babies with lack of anus (congenital anal atresia – “Imperforate Anus”) and one three months old baby who was born blind due to bilateral congenital cataract.
All three were operated before coffee break and all surgeries were smooth and uncomplicated thanks to high class and safe anesthesia as well as dedicated postoperative surveillance and care.
Such difficult and demanding anesthesia and surgical procedures are not performed in many places in this country.
The blind baby had the defect lenses extracted and replaced with artificial plastic lenses. The surgery was done with general anesthesia and with microsurgical technique.
Truly a remarkable procedure which I will soon come back to again on this Webb site.
The other two babies had a reconstruction of the anal opening – a posterior sagital ano-recto plastic (PSARP).
While the first two babies were on the operating table the third baby was waiting outside in her mother’s lap.
I was very happy and proud to watch the dedicated and professional care and surveillance carried out by our staff in the recovery room.
