An endangered bird, long thought to be extinct, was reportedly photographed for the first time in the Philippines, and then eaten. The bird, known as a Worcester's buttonquail, was only known from historic natural history drawings. The bird, described as being from a "notoriously cryptic and unobtrusive family of birds", reportedly lived (or lives) on the island of Luzon.
I mention this to note that people facing poverty do not get overly enamored with animals and conservation. The quail might be the talk of Aspen, but it is protein for the impoverished people of the Philippines. Why do you never sees dogs around Korean restaurants? The Chinese government had to ban the cooking and serving of dog meat in restaurants in tourist parts of Bejing during the Summer Olympics.
What is interesting here is that we in the western world are spending $30 million dollars of Obama's stimulus package to save the San Francisco marsh mouse (which happens to be in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's congressional district). Do you see the irony?
I am a conservationist, but I am a hunter. I am also a fan of Darwin. The dodo bird and the carrier pigeon rolled craps in the game of life. Tough. We cannot change the course of natural history by throwing money at it (half the $30 million will go to pointy-headed PhDs at Cal-Berkely to study the transgendered and despised Oakland ghetto mouse). My suggestion? Kill the San Francisco swamp mouse (they can't afford the cost of housing in San Francisco anyway) and use the money to pay off the national debt.
