What are the side effects of coming off of abused prescription drugs?

I was wondering what the side effects were of coming down off of prescription drugs such as Ritalin and Vicadin (excuse the miss spelling) because I have an incident where one of my friends is now in the hospital, and i want to know if it is just her coming down, or something more serious.
