Read by QxMD is a fabulous iOS app which turns your iphone or iPad into a personalised journal reader. For users who don’t want to manually configure their own RSS feeds, it offers an easy way to scan and catch up with the medical literature. I like the way it magically offers articles relevant to you and if you have institutional access, a quick way to download PDFs of the articles.
The latest news it that QxMD is now working with Altmetric to enhance the experience. The Press release
August 12, 2013 – QxMD and Altmetric have announced an agreement to integrate Altmetric data into Read by QxMD, a personalized medical and scientific research aggregator for iPad, iPhone and the web.
Altmetric is a service that tracks online mentions of scholarly articles in social media, newspapers, blogs and other sources. Altmetric extracts, disambiguates and collates the mentions into article-level metrics, which serve as indicators of how much attention that articles have received online. These data will be integrated into Read using the Altmetric application programming interface (API).
Read helps healthcare providers and scientists to keep up to date with groundbreaking publications in their area of clinical and scientific focus. In addition, it leverages existing university affiliations to get one-touch access to millions of full text articles.
“Read is designed to help clinicians and scientist keep up with the latest research through the provision of personalized recommendations,” says medical director of QxMD, Dr. Daniel Schwartz. “Our recommendation engine currently identifies high impact articles based on dozens of signals. The inclusion of Altmetric data into our recommendation engine will markedly improve our ability to share the most relevant content with our users.”
The embedded search engine in Read is designed to provide more relevant results than PubMed and the Altmetric API will be utilized to further enhance the relevance of these search results. In addition to algorithmic curation of the literature, Read allows users to track specific journals, article collections and search terms, and then get reminders about new content via push notification or email.
“We’re really pleased to be working with QxMD to bring Altmetric data to mobile platforms, which are increasingly being used to read scholarly papers,” says Euan Adie, founder of Altmetric. “We’re always keen to see attention metrics in new and interesting contexts, and so we’re particularly excited that our data can help to enhance the process of article discovery for users of Read.”
You can download Read by QxMD for free in iTunes . I sure hope QxMD will come up with an Android version – if you are keen you can Vote for an Android version and the developers may get one out if there is enough interest.
