KEEP IN TOUCH

Posted Jul 01 2009 6:39pm

Internet is fantastic. You can be communicating with the whole world and nobody knows where you are physically. At the moment we are in Sweden for annual leave. That is why I do not keep up with the blog as regularly usual – and the reason why I feed you some old stories.

We attended the yearly conference held by the Swedish Evangelical Mission. There Sennait was approach by a Swedish nurse who expressed her annoyance with this blog: “the patients are exposed and exploited in an unethical way and the whole thing is an orgy in misery and poverty” was the content of her critics.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get in contact with her and get the feedback directly. What I would have liked to say is that the blog is reflecting the reality in which we are working. That is unfortunately misery and poverty. And no patient is photographed without permission.

A thing which one has to remember is that in the society and culture in which we live and work there is absolutely no privacy or discretion - as in Sweden. What would have been totally unacceptable in that culture is perfectly all right here and vice versa.

In this culture it is accepted that two or more patients can be examined or being delivered at the same time in the same room. Nowhere is there any privacy – not at home nor in the hospital. Every patient is already exposed as much as you can be.

In this culture however it is absolutely not accepted to expose naked bodies as seen everywhere in media and magazines in Sweden.

All the time I have left the opportunity open for comments on the blog. Until now unfortunately only a lot of spam has been received – and very few genuine comments. I am considering closing for comments as the spam is taking too much energy and effort to get rid of.

The blog will be kept alive while we are in Sweden - so stay in touch!

Please notice that new pages are added and the old ones upgraded. Even if you already visited one page I can be worthwhile checking if it has been revised.
