i get a stinging sensation on my throat and immediately followed by a cough what causes that

something trigers a sting in my throat and when i get that sting i cough so much that i cant even do anything. the sting is different from what you get when you have a flu. the flu one is inside the mouth and on top where is this one is in the throat and it stings.
