Featured post: My New Palm Pre

Posted May 22 2010 3:41pm

My blogging buddy Vagus, who is an endocrinologist in the US, recently got a Palm Pre Plus with Verizon and he loves it. Initially he was dithering somewhat about getting one and I am glad he got one. Vagus sounds very pleased with his decision.

Lemme just say that using this phone is just a relevation. I’d been so used to my old phone being slow and unreliable, with no fun apps (aside from Bubblet) that 7 days since we got the Pre I’m still discovering new things about it!
I love how this syncs with my corporate email and calendar seamlessly. And how it syncs so well with Gmail and Hotmail, even the calendars! And with my wife and I sharing each other’s calendars we can easily update each other of family events.
The apps are great too. So many possibilities…

Read Vagus’ full blog post here . I agree with Vagus, the camera is pretty good for “only” a 3 MP camera. It takes nice outdoor shots and with macro lens attachments , it can take closeups too. To me the best part about the Pre is the UI - it’s just so slick with cards and multi-tasking. The apps are increasing day by day and there are more than sufficient medical webOS apps at this stage to justify a Palm Pre or Palm Pre Plus as a device for doctors. As a phone (hey, we do use this device to make and take calls right?) the call quality is superb. Calls do not interfere with running apps since this is a multi-tasking OS, so you go right back to where you were after the call.
Vagus says the downside to the device is the battery life and I agree. Vagus still gets 1-2 days use which is pretty good I must say. If you are using push email and constant data connection then I doubt it will last a day but apart from recharging mid-day, you could always get a higher capacity battery or spare batteries (something you can’t do with an iPhone). The other downside for me is that Palm needs to fix the memory leaks as I still get the “Too Many Cards” error after performing certain tasks particularly Universal search and searching contacts but that may be just me and my 7000 contact database. So yes, Palm your search algorithm is leaky and the problem surfaces with very large contact databases. I use JSTop (found in Preware) to do additional garbage memory cleanups so that helps for now. But I always look forward to the regular OTA firmware updates and with each update, webOS keeps getting better and better.
For those new owners of a Palm Pre or Palm Pre Plus, there is a secret world out there called Preware which is a community driven initiative run by very very knowledgeable people, full of free apps, tweaks and patches to enhance your phone. It is not for the faint-hearted but if you are not chicken, it is well worth taking the plunge and Installing Preware .
