When one tries to deal with institutions, one gets used to the big scary email. You know those emails. They send your heart into your throat because you have absolutely no point of reference regarding a person's tone. And they have characteristics that read "You're in trouble."
Type 1: The unannounced mandatory meeting "Your presence is requested tomorrow at [time] in [place] with [all of your direct supervisors]."
Type 2: "We need to talk." "Please call at [time] because I must clarify [whether you want to be in continued relationship with the institution]."
Type 3: "Constructive" meeting "Please stop by when you have [a ridiculously small amount of time] to discuss [all of these things that must be fixed to ensure your future employability]."
Yep, I'm a pro at receiving emails like this and today was no exception. However, today I realized that 3 potential advisors have started to circle. 2 I knew, 1 came as a complete surprise, but hey, I'm wanted so I'll deal with that. And even better, the one I want is on that list! Pretty cool.
