The return to running barefoot has yet to be embraced by the masses and as a result, many barefoot runners may, at times, feel as if they are alone. Nothing could be further from the truth, as the Barefoot Runners Society is a swiftly growing association which is based on the commitment to bring like-minded barefoot runners together, whether they live around the United States or around the world. Indeed, the Society’s humorous but insightful official motto is: Changing The Running World One Odd Look At A Time.
The Society Has Been A “Run”-Away Success!
The Barefoot Runners Society was formed by Tamara Gerken and Cameron Guthrie based on their love of barefoot running. Tamara had been diagnosed with multiple Morton’s neuromas (painful inflammation of a nerve in the foot) thus had no choice but to ditch the running shoes that were compressing those nerves and not allowing her toes to spread out naturally. Once Christopher McDougall’s Born To Run book was released and quickly became the barefoot runner’s inspiration, she convinced Runner’s World magazine to launch their Barefoot Running Forum. Desiring to establish a non-profit barefoot running club she joined with Cameron to launch Barefoot Runners Society to promote and advance the countless advantages and benefits of the sport. In just one year, the Society has certainly been a “run”-away success!
