One of these young girls had an unfortunate injury. She stumbled and her abdomen was penetrated by a thick stick. The wound was that large that the intestines eventrated. It took her 6 hours to reach the local health center where a clever nurse cleaned the intestines and covered them with a plastic sheet before refering the patient to Aira Hospital. An excellent idea since plastic will not adhere to the intestines and prevents evaporation and drying out of the bowel loops.
The girl didn’t make any complaints when reaching the operating department for surgery. You can check on the video clip how calm and confident she was although bowel loops were hanging outside the abdomen.
At surgery it is not just to return the intestines to the abdominal cavity. All internal organs have to be checked for injury and in her case we found several perforations of the small bowel which were sutured properly. Potential life threatening injuries.
The girl recovered fast and is now back somewhere collecting wood again.
