A Follow-Up to a Very Bad Day

Posted Nov 10 2011 10:17pm
Here's what I've learned from yesterday's events...

- My capacity to rebound from awful situations is more than I think. It may take a little extra time, but it's possible. And humor. I am capable of laughing at myself the day after a horrid day. It helps.

- There are really good people out there, people who have had their own bad days and who kindly shared their thoughts with me. It boggles my mind to think my humble little stories can somehow find their way to computers and smartphones across the county, across the world even. And I'm so very thankful for that. As a writer, there's nothing more meaningful than hearing other people's perspectives. It's enlightening, and incredibly fascinating, to engage in these conversations with people I've never met before, but we share a common thread. It's the unexpected gift I received from starting this blog. Thank you.

- Listening to "Sing" by Travis on repeat is restorative. The simplicity of the lyrics and the fact that they're rocking out on a banjo always brings a smile to my face. Travis, you had me at the first chord.

- No matter how low and inadequate I may feel, or inept and useless, I can find solace in writing. I can string words together in a sentence, and that one thought can multiply into paragraphs that make me feel safe and whole again.

I had a feeling that yesterday would be a teaching experience. It just took me 24 hours to understand...
