Bone Marrow Transplant

Posted Nov 10 2009 8:08pm 2 Comments

My name is Teri and my husband has Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. He will be spending his 43rd birthday in the hospital. He had a bone marrow transplant on October 9. He's had some complications since the BMT like fevers, pneumonia, Graft vs. Host and what seems like I list that goes on forever. I spend most of my time at his bedside. It gets a little boring because he sleeps alot and thru the nurses at the hospital he is in and some other people who are in the same situation as me, I found out about this website.

I recently started a journal on the events leading up to today and it has helped pass the time. It looks like this is going to be a long process.

He is having alot of problems with vomitting. He can barely get any food down and his last regular meal was over a month ago. The vomitting gets so bad at times and today he was given Nalidone which is a synthetic marijuana. It seems to be the only med that is working for him. It's terrible seeing him suffer. He has lost 23 pounds since being admitted to the hospital at the beginning of October. He spent a few days in the ICU for a high fever.  He's had low grade fevers on and off for a while but today his fever is spiking and we're waiting to hear from the doctor.

My husband Dave is not having a good day today. He is not feeling well at all and I feel like I'm trying to be sympathetic to him but I feel helpless. He received platelets last night and this morning and he's getting 2 units of blood right now. We have a large family and most of our older children are donating the blood and platelets along with some other family members. My blood is not compatible with his so I cannot donate. I wish I could because then I would feel like I'm helping instead of just sitting here all day. I have to stay a few feet away from him as his compromised immune system can pick up every kind of bacteria, virus, infection known to mankind.

Dave had trouble breathing and was diagnosed with Empyema, pus and fluid on the lungs from pneumonia. He had to have a tube put in his chest to drain it. He spiked a high fever and now is in the I.C.U. He has a breathing tube and will be in the I.C.U. until the breathing goes unassisted for 24 hours and the fever goes down.
