Health knowledge made personal

My goal is to push my limits (physical, emotional, mental) and encourage others to do the same.
At age 17 I was devastated with the diagnosis of a rare disease called Friedreich's ataxia (FA). What the heck is Friedreich's ataxia and what would it mean to me for the rest of my life? Over the next couple years my family and I found out that FA is a progressive neuromuscular disease that affects all muscle coordination from the toes to the finger tips. We found out that there is no treatment or cure. We found out that it is only a matter of time before I lose the ability to take care of myself, suffering a premature death.
I have lost many of the sports I love but I refused to give up cycling. I found a recumbent tricycle that allows me to travel long distance and in 2007 I founded Ride Ataxia with a 2,500 mile bike ride from San Diego to Memphis. Over the next two years we got many more people involved. From 2007 - 2009 the Ride Ataxia Cycling Team has traveled 3,300 miles involving more than 150 people and raising $700,000 for FA research.
I invite you to join our adventure as we push our personal limits in the search for a cure for FA.
