Sidetracked In Black

Posted May 17 2011 7:11am

And if the night runs over / And if the day won’t last
And if your way should falter / Along this stony pass
It’s just a moment
This time will pass – u2

Today was the day I was going to tell you all about properly wearing and testing dry gear… but then I got distracted.  I had my skin boat out anyway, ( The one that’s for sale actually ) so I decided to get all the new leather deck lines installed.  That was a good idea, (I’d been putting it off since last spring.) but then I got distracted. I realized that I still needed to give the canvas another coat of paint.  Having originally been painted white, a bit of missing black paint shows right through.  Thankfully it only takes a can of black exterior paint and brush to give it a quick retouch whenever I like.

Once I’m finished touching up the paint and replacing the old white rope with black leather, I’m going to sand and re-varnish the wood bits as well. I’m not sure why I’m doing it exactly, I mean I have the beast up for sale.  In this market I’m not going to get a nickel more for it because I dress it up. Besides, It looked fine already.  Maybe I’m just coming to the acceptance that I may simply be keeping the boat for a while.  Honestly I do love the higher volume skin boat for cruising small lakes and marshes. It just feels like the right boat for quiet excursions filled with bird song.

I imagine the real reason for the side track was simply stress management & wanderlust. One of the major reasons we get into outdoor activities in the first place, or why people restore classic cars in their back yards, or why some houses have way too many crochet blankets & doilies is because we need to escape for a while.  I was going to do some other stuff, be more productive, but the idea of simply playing with paint brushes, fiddling with leather cords and standing outside in the sun won out over personal responsibility. . . It happens.
