Paddle from your core!

Posted by Dave K.

A few summers ago, I spent a month kayaking off the coast of Vancouver Island. The first few days were brutal, I felt like my arms were going to fall off. Our guides taught us some good tips on how to paddle without wearing out your amrs. Here's what I remember. 1. Sit up straight and engage your abs - the motion that drives the paddle should come from the center of your body, NOT your arms. 2. Hold the paddle so that your arms make a 90 degree bend at the elbow when you hold it overhead. 3. Don't forget to push - when you push with one side of your boday while pulling with the other, it keeps your workout balanced 4. Find your rhythm - when you get into a good rhythm, and remember to paddle from your core, you can keep paddling all day long without getting (too) fatigued.
