Class V Training December 15th and 16th.

Saturday’s instruction and course offerings.  12-15-2012

Morning session at Team Quest from 8:30-11.

Lunch on your own.

GHS Pool from 11:45-2

Transition back to Team Quest

Afternoon session from 2:30-5pm

Sunday participants begin fitness test at 4:15pm.

Saturday only participants, in 2 teams, will compete in a skills test/scenario.

Certified : Paramedic, ski patroller, river guide.

Hands on stuff Hand signals.
Basic knots.
Use of throw ropes, or not.
3-1 mechanical advantage (z-drag).
Other options for unpinning a boat (moving weight, deflating tubes).

Proper diet and hydration before and during the trip.



Hardware : Law Enforcement, river guide.

Planning before going boating (trip plan: telling people where you go, when you return , etc).
Know the river (scout, research, first hand knowledge).
Weather conditions & river levels and what they will do while on river.
What to do if accident happens:  rescue by group, stabilize, go for help….
What info rescue needs.
How to work with rescue/law enforcement agencies.
Learn accidents: analyze what went wrong and how to do things differently.
Proper gear:  PFD, cold weather, throw bag, helmet, caribiners……etc with show and tell.


Timber : Psychologist, coach, river guide.

Ego and whitewater.

Attitude, personality types, and how these impact the trip.

Tips in reading boaters.

Water survival, drown proofing, water rescue.

Sunday’s evolution.  12-16-2012


Proper communication on the river.

Assessing the group.

Boat prep and warm up.

Whitewater swimming.

Running class V as a team.

Attempting first descents as a team.

River scenarios designed to identify limits, know and unknown of all participants.

Email info@oregonraftingteam to determine if you may  qualify to take this course.  Saturday’s participation is unlimited ($50). Sunday the participant limit is set at 10 ($75 for both days, you must take Saturday’s courses to be eligible for Sunday).
