Survey shows overwhelming support for an FDA approvedOver-the Counter Rapid HIV Test
In a survey conducted by Who’s Positive, a national HIV/AIDS awareness organization which for six years has advocated and provided opportunity for young adults to be tested for HIV across the country, seventy-eight percent of over seven-hundred respondents reported they would support an FDA approved “ mouth swab, rapid, over the counter HIV test which could be purchased at a retail store”
The results which will be discussed at the open public hearing session of the Blood Products Advisory Committee meeting on the afternoon of November 17, 2009, were collected by Who’s Positive as founding director, Tom Donohue prepares his third remarks before the committee in favor of an over-the-counter rapid HIV test. Donohue will tell the committee on the 17th that “an OTC rapid HIV test will not only make HIV testing more available but will also break down barriers that prevent many young adults from getting tested”.
