Who’s Positive Joins Worldwide Call to Boycott Hershey over HIV/AIDS Discrimination of Thirteen Year Old Honor Student

(Charlottesville, Virginia) On this 22nd anniversary of the death of Ryan White, Who’s Positive, a national HIV/AIDS Awareness organization joins AIDS Healthcare Foundation in calling for a worldwide boycott against chocolate giant Hershey for denying a thirteen year old honor student the same right to attend Milton Hershey School as his perceived HIV-negative schoolmates.

The Milton School is a boarding school which was fully funded by the Hershey Trust Company upon Mr. Hershey’s death and upon the news he and his wife were unable to have children.  Hershey boasts that the school is “true to its ideals and remains focused on helping children.”

“Maybe Hershey should boast that they are true to its ideals and remains focused on helping HIV-negative children” says Tom Donohue, HIV-positive, Pennsylvania native & Founding Director for Who’s Positive.  “Milton Hershey School denying access to an HIV-positive student in 2012 is the 20th century story of Ryan White” Donohue continues “I’m furious!  This is a thirteen year old boy who simply wants the same good education in a good scholarly school as the other perceived HIV-negative students”

Who’s Positive asks that chocolate lovers unite for this young man and join this boycott from all Hershey products until Milton Hershey School allows admission based on this HIV-positive student’s scholarly record and not his HIV-status.  We also ask that people consider avoiding the rich smell of chocolate and avoid traveling to the travel destination of Hershey until admittance is offered to this young man.  Together we can end this stigma and discrimination against all persons living with HIV/AIDS – but only if we do not remain silent.

About Who’s Positive
Who's Positive, a national HIV/AIDS awareness organization is committed to raising the awareness of HIV and its consequences. Our organization foregrounds the reality of living with HIV through the first-hand accounts of those coping with the disease. Who's Positive strives to remind the public that this is a virus with no cure. Through the stories of those living with HIV, Who's Positive hopes to reduce the transmission of HIV among teens and young adults - a population with one of the fastest growing infection rates.
