Unlike many African countries, Botswana has a very low rate of Leprosy. We currently have only 5 active cases in the entire country and 35 non active cases. Tefo is the only villager that has suffered from Leprosy (also known as Hanson’s disease). Leprosy must be caught early so that treatment can be given. Any damage that is done by Leprosy is irreversible. Tefo comes to the clinic everyday to have the ulcer on his foot cleaned and disinfected. He is no longer an “active” case but will have to care for his foot for life. Leprosy causes severe nerve damage so thankfully he feels no pain. Tefo received a Bible from Dr. Kruger of Leprosy Mission International which is an evangelical group.
