The department of non-formal education sponsored "Learners Week" in Nata from August 27 to August 31st. The theme of the week was: Literacy, the key to good health and well being. Over two hundred people attended the festivities that were held at the Kgotla. Mma Ntaisi, Principal Adult Educator, and Mma Modimowagae, Senior Adult Education Assistant were both integral in bringing the event to Nata. The purpose of the week is to encourage Nata villagers to participate in the services the department offers. They offer free literacy classes to anyone who wants to learn to read and write. Nata has a high rate of illiteracy which is why the department spent an entire week in the village. The week was filled with singing and entertainment. Pictured above is a group of villagers dramatizing the work of a traditional healer. Traditional healing is very interesting as it is similar to reikki and other new age energy practices that are offered in the west. It remains very controversial as many traditional healers claim to cure AIDS. The herbs and roots they use have however been known to cure common ailments such as headache, infection and stomach disorders.
