A friend invested in the SteriPEN recently, and I am impressed on what it claims to do. Using UV light, it destroys the DNA of disease-causing bacteria, viruses and parasitic protozoa, so that they can't make you ill. Just the kind of thing you want to have in places where you'll want and need clean water, but where it might not be readily available. Hiking, for instance. It's small, resembling a pen, and while the price tag is somewhat steep (around $130), I'd say if it does what it says it can (I'll let you know my friend's reaction), it's worth the investment.
